Once an award-winning painter was asked:
“How do you draw such magnificent paintings?” The painter’s reply: “One line at a time.”
Why do we devalue the process?
We often admire profusely achievements such as great paintings, but don’t really appreciate the process to those achievements which is repeated execution of small simple steps.
Why do we devalue the process? Because it seems difficult and boring, especially when compared with the attractive and stunning results. Of course, those results also require talent and vision. Still, the process for harnessing that talent and actualising that vision is through small steps, repeated regularly.
The universal principle
What applies to painting applies to life at large. We often get affected by people’s wonderful achievements while forgetting that they resulted from their dedicated efforts done consistently. We overlook the value of simple things because they don’t seem spectacular. Nonetheless, the simple things remain the building block for the wonderful — this is a universal principle.
This principle applies also to our inner world. Every action we do creates in our mind a corresponding impression that prompts us to repeat that action. Therefore, when we do something simple but repeatedly, the resulting impressions make it easier for us to do the same thing in future. Over time, we develop the inner discipline to dedicate ourselves to a given task, persevering through various distractions and discouragements.
The Bhagavad-Gita urges us to gently, gradually focus our mind on spiritual reality (06.25) and to refocus it whenever it wanders (06.26).
The simple way to do something wonderful is to commit ourselves to doing something simple consistently daily — the simple things are the building block for the wonderful.
A case study to understand this
Mohan always come first in his class, he is a simple boy and don’t do something so special that is why I like him and want to be like him but...
Mohan’s dedication regularity consistency every day that I cannot follow...I also want to get success like him but I’m not putting daily efforts like him.
So this clearly shows that for doing something special we need to put dedicated efforts daily, No pain No gain thus when we take pain of doing simple things daily than in long run we can achieve something very big also.
Example: Sachin Tendulkar life completely illustrates this story, how everyday his simple steps to change and evolve him in his play helped him to become the best in the world.
Are we putting efforts daily ?
As students we want to always do good and come as topper in our exams, sports or other competitions...but are we putting our daily efforts ? So, friends always remember the Golden Lines that...
“To do anything big First start doing small things daily”
Points to ponder
What is the process of doing something wonderful?
How does repetition reshape our inner world?
